Oxford Fixtures Wk 3 (MT) 2018
Week three of fixtures for Michaelmas happened last Wednesday. Our Women’s Blues, Men’s Squirrels had matches. Thanks to our captains, the reports are found below.
Women’s Blue vs. Birmingham (Away): Loss (3-1)
On Wednesday the Women’s Blues traveled to Birmingham for their second away fixture of the season so far. The facilities at Birmingham were brand new and the courts were amazing. The home team were very welcoming and we all enjoyed ourselves. First on court were Laura and Isabel, followed by Cabbage and Alethea. Isabel put in a great effort but unfortunately narrowly lost 3-0 with the scores being 14-12, 11-8, 11-2. Laura managed to win 3-0 with scores of 11-8, 11-3 and 11-7. Alethea followed this with a tough game against a strong Birmingham opponent. She lost 11-5, 11-8, 11-6. Last up was Cabbage who really gave it her all. The games were super tight as shown by the scores 12-10, 11-9 and 11-7. This meant that overall the team lost 3-1, but it was a great trip all round. Well done to the girls and fingers crossed for the match vs Loughborough this Wednesday!
Men’s Squirrels vs. Warwick 2nds (Away): Win (4-1)
The Squirrels had their second BUCS encounter of the year with Warwick 2nds this week. After the initial thrashing we served them in Week 1, it was time to bring some of the team’s new talent on court. Isaiah and Adam topped this week’s playing order, followed by Milad, Mattie and Russell who had never played a BUCS match before! First up was 5th and 4th seeds, Russell and Mattie, both of whom have highly technical playing styles. Russell took his first set easily from his opponent, foreshadowing our eventual victory. A bit of game-play-familiarisation led to Russell losing his 2nd set, but this was no great setback as he kept to basics, eventually beating his opponent 3-1. Mattie finished his match on the same score, but with much more closely-contested games (with a particularly nail-biting second set of score 12-10). Next up were Milad and Adam, our 3rd and 2nd seeds. While Milad played his usual ‘never-give-up’ game style, he sadly lost 3-0 to his opponent, in part due to the toll exams had on him (quote: “My opponent wasn’t even very good, but exams make you a potato”). Adam on the other hand, had no trouble defeating his opponent 3-0, having gotten familiar with Warwick’s court tactics from playing them in Week 1. He did however start to concede more points as the sets went by, ending his final set 12-10. It was probably the prospect of having a few free pints later that night – makes you lose your concentration! Our first seed Isaiah had a bit of a racket tragedy having broken his racket at the grip in Week 1, and then snapping his spare racket’s string during a training session. Nonetheless, Isaiah found no difficulty beating his opponent 3-0, despite having to borrow Milad’s racket. All in all a great result for the Squirrels – this season is looking extremely promising already!
