24th January Women’s Blues vs. Warwick 1sts
Our final BUCS match of the season was thankfully on home turf, at the slightly annoying time of 2pm (when does one have lunch?!). Our opponents were even keener than us for this fixture, and were raring to go 20 minutes before the start time. A good warmup down (we’re getting good at these) Charly and Isabel took to the courts at 4th and 3rd strings respectively. Warwick brought a slightly stronger team than the previous time we played them, so everyone had a good match. Charly won 3-0 despite some close games (11-9 and 12-10 in the first two). She was consistent the whole way through and hit some great serves and drives. Her fitness was also a great attribute in this game. Isabel initially found it difficult to adjust to her opponents playing style as her opponent played some strong counter boasts to Isabel’s already well-honed ones. When Isabel started playing a length and keeping it tight she started to play more comfortably. From the 3rd game onwards Isabel played her own game and won the match 3-1. Eve won her first and lost her second game. Again it was close, with plenty of long rallies and a 12-10 in the third game. Despite some serving inaccuracies, Eve won the match with her particularly effective kill shots, kept her head and came off with a smile. Katie was playing at number 1 against a previous (and much improved) opponent. She lost the first game 11-13, but came back to win 3-1 with every game going to deuce, and admits that it’s probably the best squash she’s ever played. Not forgetting Sam – our true number one – who had a practise hit against Tim the same afternoon to avoid feeling left out!
We’re delighted to be concluding the BUCS season second in the midlands 1A division, having only lost to Leicester all year. We’d like to thank Warwick and the other teams in the league for great matches and exceptional sportsmanship.
